LOWER GWP HFC/HFO BLENDS USED FOR HEAT PUMPS AND TRANSPORT REFRIGERATION

02 April 2018

The low GWP HFC/HFO blend refrigerant R-454C, a “mildly flammable” refrigerant is being used in an air-source heat pump designed for use in factories. According to the manufacturer, it is the industry’s first heat pump of its type capable of heating water to 75°C with an outside temperature as low as -20°C, achieved using a two-stage compression cycle. High energy efficiency is achieved by a combination of the two-stage compression cycle and optimal engineering of the refrigeration cycle resulting in a COP of 3.3.

R-454C is said to be a close match to HCFC-22 based technology, with a GWP of 148 and it is classified as an A2L, a “mildly flammable” refrigerant.

The lower GWP HFC/HFO blend refrigerant R-452A is being used in a hybrid refrigeration system for transport refrigeration semitrailer applications, which has been recognised for its innovative design and technologies.

It has been awarded a European Transport Award for Sustainability 2018 in the category “vehicle cooling and heating systems.” As well as the R-452A refrigeration unit, the system includes a drive package that has an alternator installed on the tractor engine and an inverter drive system to provide constant electric power and operate the unit with its diesel engine turned off.

R-452A is a non-flammable HFC/HFO blend replacement for R-404A, suitable for transport refrigeration, with a GWP (2140) that is about half that of R-404.
