Ecodesign

The Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC is a framework directive that does not in itself define any detailed requirements for specific product groups. Different products are divided up into so-called lots. The defined requirements must be observed and documented in production.

All the products covered by the Directive 2009/125/EC and Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 are listed at https://energy-efficient-products.ec.europa.eu/product-list_en#heating-cooling-and-ventilation. These include certain categories of refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heating and cooling equipment.

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force on 18 July 2024is the cornerstone of the Commission’s approach to more environmentally sustainable and circular products. The ESPR replaces the Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC and establishes a framework for setting ecodesign requirements on specific product groups. The ESPR continues to apply to energy-related products and reinforces the range of ecodesign requirements that can be set for products, which can comprise requirements relating to durability, circularity and the overall reduction of the environmental and climate footprint of products, amongst many others.

The ESPR is a piece of framework legislation that lays the foundation for the subsequent adoption of concrete rules, either on a product-by-product basis or horizontally, based on groups of products with similar characteristics.

The ESPR builds on the approach successfully pioneered under the EU’s current Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Framework for two, respectively three, decades now. It is estimated that the current ecodesign and energy labelling requirements achieved a 12% reduction in final energy consumption in 2023.
