UK BREWERY REPLACES AMMONIA CHILLERS WITH HFO-1234ZE CHILLERS COMBINING SAFETY, HIGH EFFICIENCY AND PERFORMANCE WITH LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

30 March 2021

A UK brewery concluded that replacing its old ammonia system with three large, more efficient 1.4MW HFO-1234ze(E) chillers provided financial and safety benefits. The new chillers were installed in the same location and connected to the existing pipework and power infrastructure. It is reported that the ultra-low GWP (AR5 value <1) HFO-1234ze(E) chillers can outperform the ammonia chillers by 25% according to the energy efficiency ratio (EER) analysis.

The new HFO-1234ze(E) chillers can provide reliable temperature control in the most demanding applications. They feature a variable volume index compressor and permanent magnet motor that allow the equipment to operate at the most appropriate pressure ratio and achieve outstanding part load efficiencies.

The report noted that HFO-1234ze(E) is mildly flammable and non-corrosive in comparison to ammonia, which is toxic and can pose serious risks to human health and food and beverage operations.
