KEEPING WARM OR COOL WITH HFC/HFO BLEND REFRIGERANT R-454B

27 February 2021

Refrigerant R-454B, a low GWP alternative to R-410A is increasingly being used in chillers and heat pumps due to its low GWP (466) and mildly flammable low toxicity classification (A2L). A redesigned second-generation chiller range offers improved efficiencies with Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) values up to 5 and reduced noise levels contained in a small equipment footprint. The scroll compressors are optimised for use with R-454B and the chiller range, with capacities from 40 to 870 kW, meet the increased requirements of the ErP (Eco-design) directive (EU) 2016/2281 (effective from 2021).

An expanded heat pump range will shortly be available using R-454B. Compared to previous models, the air to water heat pumps have up to 10% better COP and up to 15% increase in SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) within the same footprint. An integrated heat recovery system can be added, and the heat pumps offer higher water temperatures at lower outdoor air temperatures than previous models.

An explanation of SCOP (used for heat equipment) and SEER (used for cooling equipment) and the Eco-design Directive energy efficiency rating requirements is available here
