IN BRIEF: HOW HFOS HELP KEEP YOU SAFE ON AIRCRAFT

25 April 2021

Insecticides are used on board aircraft to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, zika and dengue via air travel. An aerosol insecticide using the non-flammable propellant HFO-1234ze with GWP <1 (AR5 value) is the first aerosolised aircraft insecticide worldwide to receive an approval for sale and use in all 27 Members States of the European Union, including Iceland, Norway and Switzerland and is the first to also acquire a EU Authorisation under the European Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). The BPR examines whether a biocide, such as an insecticide, is harmless to humans and the environment. Previous generation aircraft insecticide propellants are usually HFCs such as HFC-134a.

Disinsection is a public health measure that is recommended by the International Health Regulations. It involves treatment of the interior of the aircraft with insecticides specified by WHO.
