Improving energy efficiency for data centre cooling using R-513A system

11.03.2026

A new data centre cooling system aims to improve energy efficiency and support compliance with F-gas Regulation 2024/573.  The indoor floor-mount unit range is equipped with onboard compressors and designed for precision air- cooling in mission-critical applications through direct expansion. The PAM (pumped air-mixed) model range is designed to operate with inverter-driven compressors and is optimized for the eco-friendly, non-flammable, and low-toxicity R513A refrigerant (A1, GWP 630). It is available in both air-cooled versions with an optional free cooling feature, and water-cooled configuration for managing heat rejection to the outside, depending on specific system configurations. The use of non-flammable R-513A allows an approximately 70% reduction of the Global Warming Potential (GWP) when compared to the traditional R410A refrigerant, without any compromise from a safety and toxicity point of view. The choice of this refrigerant contributes, to reduce installation costs as no additional safety devices are required, as is the case of indoor units using flammable refrigerants.

The cooling system includes a pumped refrigerant circuit, which enhances free cooling by circulating refrigerant through a pumped loop and operates with significantly less power than traditional compressors. This approach allows the system to operate at a fraction of the power consumption of traditional compressor-driven cooling during favourable ambient conditions. This can deliver measurable reductions in energy use while also lowering mechanical stress on compressors, helping to extend system lifespan.
