R-455A USED IN PREFERENCE TO PROPANE IN CATERING REFRIGERATED DISPLAY CASES

An Italian manufacturer of plug-in (hermetic) refrigerated display cases is using mildly flammable A2L refrigerant R-455A (GWP 148 F-gas value) in its new equipment range as it provides a good match to the capacity with and efficiency of R-404A, but without some of the requirements necessary for the use of highly flammable propane (R-290). The refrigerated display cases are being used in public areas like canteens and self-service restaurants to keep food fresh at appropriate temperatures reliably and efficiently. According to the manufacturer, R-455A provides the best balance of eco-sustainability, cost and safety for its customers. In addition, in most cases the refrigerant does not require investment in certification of components as required by EU’s directive on equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.

R-455A is a HFC/HFO refrigerant blend of R-744/R-32/R-1234yf (3.0/21.5/75.5%), with a GWP 96% lower than R-404A. Its GWP may also be quoted as 146 which is the AR5 value.
