NON-FLAMMABLE HFC/HFO REFRIGERANTS APPROVED FOR USE IN BUS AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

14 November 2018

A European manufacturer has announced approval for the use of non-flammable R-513A and R-450A as lower GWP alternatives to R-134a in its bus air conditioning systems. With the alternative refrigerants, the system delivers a virtually identical performance and have the same safety classification as R-134a (Class A1). Refrigerant R-513A is an azeotrope and has a GWP of 631 compared to the GWP of 1430 for R-134a. Refrigerant R-450A has a GWP of 605 and is a zeotropic refrigerant which means the refrigerant must be handled accordingly. The manufacturer has provided guidance for the use of the new refrigerants including the required lubricant oil, and hose changes.
