IN BRIEF: EMISSIONS FROM USE OF FLUOROCARBONS AS FEEDSTOCK

08 October 2020

Ozone Regulation 1005/2009 requires users of ozone depleting substances as feedstock to report the quantities used, their processes and emissions. According to the recent EEA Briefing Paper, in 2019, feedstock use amounted to 159,157 metric tonnes, and the emission rate from feedstock uses was 0.03 %, comparable with 2018 and much lower than the emission rate for earlier years. This appears to point towards improvements in emission control by industry. The TEAP 2020 Progress Report notes that “the relatively low rate of emissions achieved illustrates the effectiveness of local controls, and industrial diligence, in the management and control of ODS emissions in feedstock use within the EU.”

Explanatory Note: Ozone depleting substances are used as feedstock and are necessary for the manufacture of other products such as refrigerants, foam blowing agents, polymers, pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals.
