Dear subscriber,

In this May EFCTC newsletter, we cover a response to the EC F-gas Regulation proposal, drafted by AREA, EHPA, and EPEE and discuss the Norwegian Environment Agency’s update on the PFAS restriction proposal and F-gases, providing additional information to complement their update. Do not miss the annex to the newsletter if you want to learn more about the topic of HFOs and TFA (trifluoroacetic acid).

In this edition, we also discuss highly efficient heat pumps and chiller systems, as well as the decrease of HFC emissions and report on the highlights of the IPCC report, which explains how low refrigerants can contribute to climate change mitigation.

Interested in EFCTC’s list of upcoming events relating to fluorocarbons? You can find them listed at the bottom of the newsletter and on the fluorocarbons.org website.

Ps. The EFCTC socioeconomic assessment (SEA) of PFAS restriction on F-gas sector deadline for submissions has been postponed until 15th May, so you are still in time to participate.

Thank you for your continued interest in EFCTC.

Trade associations respond to F-gas proposal

EFCTC and trade associations for contractors and equipment suppliers have provided initial responses to the Commission F-gas proposal. While there are several positive new proposed measures, particularly to prevent illegal trade, deep concerns have been expressed about proposed measures for prohibitions on equipment critical to…

Update on the PFAS restriction proposal and F-gases by the Norwegian Environment Agency

The Norwegian Environment Agency held a virtual briefing on 30th March providing an update on the PFAS restriction proposal and F gases. The briefing confirmed that HFC-152a and HFC-32 are outside the scope of the current working definition. However, two important points, in the presentation slides, would have benefited from additional reference…

Large heat pump or chiller available with low GWP refrigerants

A German manufacture is introducing a redesigned equipment series available as a water-water heat pump and a water-cooled chiller for brine applications and are available with A2L low-GWP R-1234ze refrigerant and the high-efficiency non-flammable refrigerants R-515B (F-gas GWP 293), R-514A (F-gas GWP 7) and R-134a (F-gas GWP 1430). The heat…

IPCC Report: Low GWP refrigerants, including HFOs, can contribute to climate change mitigation

The IPCC AR6 report, “Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change,” comments on how low GWP refrigerants, which includes HFOs, together with reduced energy demand and improved energy efficiency can contribute to climate change mitigation. Here are some important points relevant to HFCs and HFOs. The full report, technical summary and summary for…

EU 2021 greenhouse gas inventory report details HFC emissions

The 2021 EU official GHG inventory submission was published on the UNFCC website on 15th April 2022. According to the submission, HFC emissions from refrigeration and air conditioning continued the downtrend that started in 2014, but RAC contributes 81% of total F-gas emissions in 2020. HFC emissions continued to decrease in 2020 and…
