NEWSLETTER #197 - JULY 2022

Dear subscriber,

In this EFCTC July newsletter, we first highlight a benefit of F-Gases, which is the reduction in transport refrigeration emissions using HFC-410A and R-452A systems. Read more about these benefits at https://www.refrigerantanswers.eu/benefits-of-f-gases/

Also in this edition, we review some technical and scientific reports on F-Gases. This comprises a paper reporting on the monitoring of short chain PFAS, including TFA in sources of German drinking water and key messages from the Montreal Protocol TEAP report on the continued provision of information on energy efficient and low-global-warming-potential technologies.

We also discuss the HFC contribution (1.18%) in 2021 to the climate warming influence of greenhouse gases (GHG) and report on a paper that discusses the contribution of short-lived climate pollutants to global warming. This looks at the implications of controlling long-lived gases (CO2) and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in the drive to minimise the increase in global warming. SLCPs are black carbon, methane, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

Interested in EFCTC’s list of upcoming events relating to fluorocarbons? You can find them listed at the bottom of the newsletter and on the fluorocarbons.org website.

Thank you for your continued interest in EFCTC.

Marta Siddu – EFCTC Manager

Reducing transport refrigeration emissions using HFC-410A and R-452A

Hermetic home delivery refrigeration unit reduces emissions: A transport refrigeration unit, for use on delivery vehicles for home delivery has received a technology award in Japan. The hermetic unit, which uses non-flammable R-410A and a twin rotary compressor, according to manufacturer’s specification, contributes to reducing CO2 and saving energy by automatically…

Monitoring of short chain PFAS, including TFA in sources of German drinking water

Environmental Effects and Interactions of Stratospheric Ozone Depletion

PFASs are a highly diverse group of substances, and knowledge about this group in water sources is still scarce, beyond the well-studied substances which includes TFA (trifluoroacetic acid). A recent paper ‘Ultra-Short-Chain PFASs in the Sources of German Drinking Water: Prevalent, Overlooked, Difficult to Remove, and Unregulated’ [1] provided analytical data in water…

TEAP report on continued provision of information on energy efficient and low-global-warming-potential technologies

Parties to the Montreal Protocol requested the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) to prepare a report [1] on energy efficient and lower-global-warming-potential technologies and on measures to enhance and maintain energy efficiency during hydrofluorocarbon transition in equipment. The key messages cover a wide range of issues discussed in the detailed report, which…

2021: HFCs contribute 1.18% to climate warming influence of greenhouse gases

  aggi.fig2

The US NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released its 2021 update of the AGGI (Annual Greenhouse Gas Index), which follows the evolution of the radiative forcing (ability of all greenhouse gases to trap heat) since the onset of the industrial revolution. The HFC contribution in 2021 is now 1.18%…

Contribution of short-lived climate pollutants to global warming

Picture3 Newsletter July 2022

The US NOAA Annual Greenhouse Gas Index (AGGI) provides a simple accessible analysis of the contribution of a range of greenhouse gases to global warming (see previous item). A more detailed recent study ‘Mitigating climate disruption in time: A self-consistent approach for avoiding both near-term and long-term global warming’ looks at the…
