2018 : HFCs CONTRIBUTE 1.03% TO ATMOSPHERIC GREENHOUSE GASES

The US NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released its 2018 update of the AGGI (Annual Greenhouse Gas Index), which follows the evolution of the radiative forcing (ability of all greenhouse gases to trap heat) since the onset of the industrial revolution. The HFC

EU 2019 GREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORY REPORT DETAILS HFC EMISSIONS

The EU publishes annually its official inventory submission under the UNFCCC.
Reported emissions of HFCs declined in 2017 compared to 2016 by 2.5%. Between 2014 and 2017 (note: a period before the large increase in illegal HFC imports) reported HFC emissions have fallen by 8%.…

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ILLEGAL TRADE IN ODSs AND HFCs

The successive phase-outs of CFCs and HCFCs and the phase-down of HFCs has inevitably resulted in illegal trade activity regionally and globally. The exact scale of the illegal trade can only ever be estimated based on activity and intelligence from the market and illegal trade interceptions. The main opportunity for illegal trade occurs…

REFRIGERANT ANALYZERS USED TO HELP IDENTIFY ILLEGAL TRADE

Refrigerant analysers are being used by international customs agencies to help prevent the import of illegal refrigerants. Handheld analysers using infrared technology are being used to identify the refrigerant and if it is potentially dangerous illegal. The handheld device allows border agents to quickly identify suspect refrigerant and hold the shipments for further…

IN BRIEF: EFFECTS OF SHORT-LIVED (SOME HFCS) AND LONG-LIVED GASES

Long-lived greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere, so continued emissions of these gases lead to continually increasing warming. Warming created by long-lived gases is not naturally reversible on the timescale of decades-to-centuries. Short-lived greenhouse gases affect the climate in qualitatively different ways to CO2, with constant rates of emission leading to an approximately…
