An HFC-based refrigeration system has been chosen for the recent London 2012 Olympics Main Stadium, a decision in line with the recommendation by the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, allowing HFCs to be used when safe, technically feasible, cost effective, energy efficient and more environmentally acceptable alternatives do not exist.
Indeed, in the case of the Main Stadium, it was decided to use an HFC-based system, because alternative systems would have a higher (less favorable) Total Equivalent Warming Impact (TEWI), due to additional construction work that would result in higher overall energy consumption.
Other temporary venues, such as the basketball and water polo arenas, or the media centers, were cooled with HFC-based equipment and the same for portable cooling units.
