Fluorocarbons producers have warned customers to only purchase refrigerants from authorized suppliers, to prevent them from introducing counterfeit refrigerants containing toxic and flammable substances into their systems.
Recent explosions and at least three fatalities involving see reefers have led to the discovery of methyl chloride (R-40), a toxic and flammable substance, in counterfeit HFC-134a or HCFC-22 refrigerant cylinders.
Thousands of cylinders of fake refrigerants have already been seized, and producers are reinforcing their campaigns against counterfeit refrigerants.
A number of investigations are ongoing concerning refrigerant blends suspected of containing methyl chloride.
