The human health hazards of this material are expected to be similar to other liquefied gases including N2, CO2, CFCs, HCFCs, and HBFCs. Therefore, direct eye or skin contact with the liquid or cold gas can cause chilling or possibly frostbite of exposed tissues. Inhalation of high concentrations can be harmful or fatal due to oxygen deprivation and/or heart irregularities (arrhythmias). Misuse of the product by deliberately inhaling high concentrations of this gas could cause death without warning. Persons with preexisting cardiac or central nervous system disorders may be more susceptible to effects of an overexposure.

In a 28-day inhalation study in rats, a NOAEL was established at 50,000 ppm and a NOEL was established at 500 ppm. No histopathological effects were noted.

In a 90-day inhalation study in rats, a NOAEL was established at 2,000 ppm. An increase in myocarditis was observed at 10,000 and 50,000 ppm. This was neither observed at the 500 or 2,000 ppm dose levels mor in the 28-day study at 50,000 ppm.

Subchronic studies have shown dose-related increases in urinary fluoride levels, urine volumes and water consumption. Increases were observed in hematological parameters, BUN levels and serum liver enzyme activities (GOT, GPT). These increases dit not follow a dose response, but indicate that HFC-245fa is metabolized in the liver. After a two week recovery period following the 28-day inhalation study, significant recovery was observed.

In an in vitro human lymphocyte study without S9 at 30 % v/v, weak positive activation was observed. However it was not active with S9 up to 70 % v/v.

In a in vivo mouse micronucleous study, no activation was observed up to 1000,000 ppm.
