Toxicological profile of HCFC-124 (1 chloro-1,2,2,2-tetrafluoroethane)

The HCFC-124 rat 4-hour inhalation LC50 in male and female rats is >230,000 < 300,000 ppm

HCFC-124 cardiac sensitization NOAEL in a sensitive laboratory animal species is = 10,000 ppm and the threshold for effects is 26,000 ppm. It showed minimal effects in a 90 day study at 50,000 ppm but not at 15,000 ppm. It was not carcinogenic nor toxic at 50,000 ppm in a 2-yr carcinogenicity/chronic toxicity study, which was the highest dose tested.

HCFC-124 is not a developmental toxin in laboratory animals. The maternal no-observed-effect level (NOEL) was 15,000 ppm and developmental NOEL was 50,000 ppm, which was the highest dose tested.

HCFC-124 is not considered genotoxic. HCFC-124 was not mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium (Ames assay). It was not active in a human chromosome aberration assay either with or without metabolic activation. HCFC-124 was negative in an in vivo mouse micronucleus assay.
